Aftercare is just as important as the application. Use our pro tips to learn how to properly care for your hair extensions.

A re-installation is required every 2 to 3 months to prevent hair damage.

The Best Way To Wash Your Hair:

When you step into the shower, rinsing and washing your hair with hot water is a significant first step, followed by a warm water rinse. Hot water opens your hair’s cuticle, which helps the shampoo and conditioner do a better job on your hair. You want to switch to warm water when you rinse the product out of your hair. Make sure to scrub the scalp and shampoo twice. The first wash removes all the product build-up, while the second focuses on cleansing your scalp. Apply shampoo only to the scalp, and let it clean the rest of the hair when you rinse it out. To make your extensions last, we recommend using Pureology Color Fanatic leave-in spray before styling your hair. Living Proof dry shampoo is highly recommended if you have oily hair or need to wash your hair more than 3 times a week. It will instantly make your hair look and feel clean and fresh without washing it. Your hair's best friend is 24K Gold Argan Oil Serum. Using this oil each night before bed is essential for your extensions and will prevent dryness and split ends! Apply a small amount through the mids and ends of your hair and brush through for an even application.

For light-blonde clients, wash your hair with purple shampoo once a week. Extensions soak up the pigment from purple shampoo much faster than regular hair. Diluting the purple shampoo with a normal shampoo will reduce the strength of the pigment, making it less likely that your extensions will be left with a purple hue, too. We recommend Fanola No Yellow Shampoo and Fanola No Orange Shampoo for darker shades of blonde or light brown hair. Apply conditioner only from the mid-shaft or low ponytail down. Keep the conditioner off your scalp and away from the tape. You should always correctly rinse your hair thoroughly to avoid any buildup. If you have some residue oils, we highly recommend a clarifying shampoo to remove any excess.

Never wash your hair upside down—always keep your head upright! Do not shampoo, wet hair, or exercise to the point of perspiration for 72 hours after application. No exceptions.

*** A sudden drop or increase in temperatures, or even a complete change of climate, may see your body react by increasing its oil production to protect your scalp and hair. This overcompensation helps support your hair through harsh conditions. If your scalp is oily or the extensions are sticky, we recommend washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo once weekly to remove oil buildup.

 Drying Your Extensions:

It's always important not to dry your hair when it's soaking wet.

Not only will it take you longer, but it will require more heat to suck out the moisture. Start by towel drying your hair as much as possible, or even wait 5 - 10 minutes to let it air dry before starting.

Using the High heat setting, move the air through your hair using your fingers to comb through the extensions. Be sure the air is in constant motion and moving all around the head. Be cautious of blow drying in one spot for too long, as that will be too much heat for your hair extensions and cause slippage.

 Brushing Your Extensions:

Brush, brush, brush! Brushing your hair is very important. This will allow you to prevent and rid your hair of tangles while keeping it looking and feeling beautiful.

Sleeping:

Sleeping with a silk pillowcase feels great and helps prevent your hair from tangling. Braid your hair into one loose braid or ponytail. Never sleep on wet hair. Always make sure your hair is completely dry before going to bed.

Swimming:
Chlorine is not hair-friendly. If entering the pool or ocean, apply leave-in conditioner mid-to-ends and put your hair into a ponytail. Wash your hair after swimming. It is recommended that you wear your hair up or in a ponytail when you swim.

Exercise:
Please dry the tapes after exercising. The hair must be completely dry to avoid tangling at the root.

Itchy Scalp:

Wash your hair thoroughly before installing the hair extensions, and follow the rigid aftercare routine recommended by your stylist. Although many know that itchiness is a common aftermath of hair extensions, many still wonder why it happens. This problem has various reasons, which may vary depending on the person. Light itchiness after the first few days is normal and should not cause concern.

That said, below are 3 reasons commonly associated with itchy hair extensions:

1. Sensitive scalp

Usually, if you have a sensitive scalp, itchiness will occur even if it’s your first time having hair extensions. If you have never dealt with dandruff and the extensions are correctly installed, then it’s just your sensitive scalp adjusting to the additional strain on your head. Usually, the itchiness is just mild and will subside after a few days. Also, make sure you use the appropriate aftercare routine for your hair.

2. Product build-up
When you have hair extensions, you must wash and rinse your hair thoroughly to eliminate all the products. Doing so helps prevent product build-up on your hair extensions and scalp.

3. Excessive sweating
If you regularly go to the gym or exercise, you may notice your head getting itchier as you sweat. This is due to the sweat that sits on your scalp and gets trapped on your hair extensions. The extra weight from the extensions produces heat, contributing to more sweating. The itching can be annoying if you wait too long between washes, so it is recommended to wash your hair more frequently than usual.

IS IT NORMAL TO LOSE SOME EXTENSIONS?

It is important to remember that losing a few strands over 12 weeks is completely normal! Sometimes, this happens while brushing or styling! Here are the main reasons:

Root Conditioning: Conditioning is great for hair extensions as long as it’s done from the mid-shaft down. Do not rinse upside down, which can cause the extensions to slip.

Product Buildup: Excess product buildup breaks down the tape. No alcohol—or oil-based products should be used close to the scalp where the tape is. They will break the adhesive down much faster. Please double-wash your hair and scrub the scalp well, even between the rows, with warmer, not colder water.

Naturally Oily Scalp/Hair: There are those with excess oil and naturally oily hair. Tape extensions won’t hold as long, and you must re-install them more frequently (every six weeks or so). You can book a touchup ($75) on the website if you reach five sandwiches or ten pieces, or bring your strands to your re-installation appointment.  â€‹

HAIR SHEDDING PROCESS

On average, we lose 50-100 hairs per day as part of this natural process. However, when wearing hair extensions, shedding hair that would usually come out in your brush or shower will still be attached to the extension and will not come out until the extension is removed. When the hair extensions are removed, the shed hair is combed out, and it appears that much hair is coming out all at once. There is no need to be concerned that your hair is falling out during removal, as this is simply the naturally-shed hair being released.

DO HAIR EXTENSIONS FADE?

Colour fade is usually a gradual process where over time the colour starts to fade and change shade.

As mentioned, this is natural for your hair extensions to experience, similar to your natural hair.

WHY DOES MY HAIR FEEL SO THIN AFTER REMOVAL
Sometimes, hair feels thin after extensions simply due to taking them out. You’ve gotten used to thicker hair. You’ve acclimated to how it looks and feels, and now they’re gone, and you’re left with thinner hair again.

This could take weeks to get used to and make your hair feel extra thin.
